Browsing and transfers

Double-click a connection in the sidebar, or pick it in the command palette, to open its tab. Opening a connection that already has a tab brings that tab forward.

Folders

Object storage has no folders, only keys with slashes in them. Cleat shows the part of a key up to each / as a folder, which is what every other S3 tool does. New Folder creates the empty marker object (name/) that makes a folder exist before anything is in it.

The path box shows where you are as bucket/folder/. Type a path into it and press Enter to go straight there — including to a bucket your key cannot list.

Large folders load a page at a time as you scroll. Load All fetches the rest in one go, and Stop interrupts it. Sorting by a column sorts what has been loaded so far.

Select several rows with Shift- or Ctrl-click (Cmd-click on macOS).

Upload and download

Upload sends files or a whole folder into the folder you are looking at. If any of them would replace an object that is already there, Cleat asks first. Download saves the selection — files, folders, or both — to a folder you choose, and likewise asks before replacing files that are already on disk. Folders are transferred with everything beneath them.

Transfers run in the background through the same queue as SFTP transfers: progress is in the Transfers pane and the status bar, and each can be cancelled there. Closing a tab with transfers still running asks before abandoning them.

Large files are uploaded in parts (see Limits and settings). If a multipart upload is cancelled or fails, Cleat tells the store to discard the parts already sent, so nothing is left behind taking up space.

A download is written beside its destination and moved into place only when it is complete. A cancelled or failed download leaves no partial file.

Preview

Double-click a file, or choose Preview from its menu, to look at it without downloading it yourself:

  • Text opens in a viewer.
  • Images open in a viewer with Actual Size and drag-to-pan.
  • Archives — zip, tar, tar.gz / tgz and gz — show a listing of what is inside. Nothing is extracted. Up to 500 entries are listed and the rest are counted.
  • Anything else, or anything over the size limit, shows a card saying why.

Every one of these offers Download… and Open Externally, which fetches the file to a temporary folder and hands it to whatever application your system uses for that type. The temporary copy is removed when the tab closes.

Everything else on the row menu

Copy Key copies the object's key; Copy URL copies its plain URL, which opens only if the object is public. Properties… shows size, modification time, storage class, content type and ETag.

Restoring tabs

Object-storage tabs come back when Cleat restarts, in the bucket and folder they were in. The tab that was in front loads straight away, in the background; the others fetch nothing until you switch to them. Either way a store that is slow or unreachable does not hold up launch.
